Query on visa Appointment

Hi,

I have two queries.

1. I took an appointment for my inlaws in dec. In case my father in law doesnot want to come to US, can I just cancel his appointment but keep my mother in law's appointment on the same day, or will it be prudent for both of them to go together anyways?

2. My mother in law's passport is in a different name than the 'mother's name' given in my wife's passport. Is this an issue? Do we have to take any affidavit that both the names belong to the same person?

1. He should not go for the interview if he does not want to visit US.
2. It is not an issue most of the times, but sometimes they want to look at evidence establishing the relationship between the applicant and
the host in US. If your wife has a birth certificate showing her mother's name as in mother's passport,that will do.

1. but going back to my first query can I keep the same appointment for my mother in law alone?

2. My wife doesn't have a birth certificate, will an affidavit help?

Where are they applying?

1) Yeah you can keep the same appointment and your MIL can alone appear for the interview. I did the same with my parents, my father didnt attend the interview as he was busy.
This is at chennai consulate, I am not sure how other consulates work.

They are applying at Kolkata Consulate. Is this true there too?
Also what to do about the name issue?
