  • Sponsoring Cousin Tourist Visa

    Hello, there!
    My cousin, whom I consider my sister (my mother raised her since she was born), tried to get a visa in April, to come visit me and it was denied. Apparently she couldn't prove she had enough strong ties with our home country, Brazil. I am actually also naturalized American, married to an american and I had a baby last year. My husband is our main Income source, I work part time as a baby sitter... How can we sponsor her to come visit? Can we do it together or should only my husband apply? we will also senda letter to the Consulate explain how shes related to us and that we'll make sure to drive her to the airport after the two weeks to make sure she returns to Brazil. She'll try again in July... She is 32, married, social worker... Her husband will stay in Brazil as she plans to visit us. Any input or advice will be greatly appreciated...

    Actually , your sponsoring goes against her. She has to show good financial ties to be able to fund her own trip, not depend on you to fund her trip.

    Also, no amount of writing letters to consular and convincing that she will return works.

    Plain and simple, they look at her work , financial and family ties to home country.

    *Can you post her last interview whatever she can recall.

    *ALso, what does her husband do ? IS he earning well?

    * the last time who did she say was paying for the trip? did you send sposorship papers?

    * has she been out of the country before ever?

      The interview...

      1) what is the purpose of your trip? "I'm going to visit my cousin who just had a baby."
      2) what do you do? "I'm a social worker"
      3) how long have you been a social worker? "For 9 years"
      4) are you married? "Yes"
      5) Why is your husband not going? "He can't take time off at this time"
      6) what is his occupation? "Plumber"
      7) do you have any property? "No. We do have a car.."
      8) how much do you make? "1000 dollars a month"
      9) let me see your bank statement... (There was 1000 in her account)
      10) who is going to pay for your trip? "I am, with my vacation money and bonus I'm about to receive."

      Unfortunately your visa has been denied.

      She will enroll into a post graduation class, it is another tie. Her husband makes around the same money that she makes... Would it help??? I did not send sponsorship papers the first time... She has never been out of the country... What can we do to improve her chances? How long should we wait until she applies for a visa again?
      We thought about waiting about a year and try to meet with her in Europe next Summer, that way when she tried again, (probably 1 year and a half from now) maybe the trip to Europe would help, having proof that she had already left the country and gone back... But I talked to a lawyer and he advised us to try it again with the affidavit... I am confused, don't know what to do. And I didn't want her to be denied so many times... It'd only make it harder and harder for her to get a visa in the future.

      Thanks for a prompt reply!!!

        Reasons for denial;

        *Bad Purpose of visit ;; going ALONE to visit cousin who had a baby. The officer thinks you may be going as a "baby sitter".
        If she was going with her husband, for a few weeks vacation,without mentioning the baby, it would have given a more natural impression to the officer.

        *Not very good work ties at home ; no offence, but social worker and plumber are not really considered high earning jobs.

        To increase chances;
        1. travel to other countries can go in her favour.
        2. Apply maybe 6 months later with her husband for a 2-3 weeks vacation to US ( and to visit you) after traveling to maybe europe/ southeast asia.
        3. If possible show stronger ties to Home . better income, own home.

          I really appreciate the help! It makes me upset that my own sister is not allowed to come visit me. I wish I had that right.... Anyway, I'll post here again in a few months to let you guys know what happened in her second interview. We are doing whatever we can to prove stronger ties and both of them will try together next time. Thanks again!
