I have a valid US visa on my old passport, but my current passport has a name change on it. Previously my middle name showed up as my last name, and also on the Visa as well. On my current passport I have corrected the error, and it now shows my actual last name. I tried travelling to New York 2 days ago but I was stopped at the airport and was told that I need to make an appointment with the US embassy and get my visa corrected! I contacted the embassy and I was told I would have to get a new Visa altogether. This is obviously a problem at the moment as I don't have the time or convenience for this.
Now as far as I know I shouldn't need a new visa because several people change their name (for example after marriage) and are still able to travel as long as they have both their passports with them, and they are valid.
So I am confused. I am thinking of trying to fly to the US from the country where I got my visa from, and not from where I am now (London). Should I be applying for a new visa or was the officer questioning me in London mistaken?
