Passport renewal and appointment

My father's passport will expire in april 2006. So he applied for renewal of his passport, which is supposed to take one and a half months, may be more. Is it a good idea to take an appointment in February with his present passport number or do I have to wait until the new passport arrives? I am worried that I cannot get an appointment in Feb then. And no more modification of appointments I guess. His current passport will be cancelled after he gets the new one. Any ideas or opinions are highly appreciated.

I guess you need to call the agency that schedules appointments ( tts or
VFS). They can give authentic answers to such qs.
