  • Visitor Visa appointment booking when last name is blank

    Team,

I am trying for a visitor visa for my in-laws and have issue similar to 1000 others where the last name is missing and full name is printed in given names section for my father-in-laws passport. After reading lot of forums,i understand that in such case i should be putting "FNU" in first name and enter the "Given names" in surname section. However i have two questions

    1) After submitting the DS160, since we have a new process of scheduling appointments and paying the visa fees, should we enter the same FNU as firstname and "Given name" in last name field while adding my father-in-laws name on USTravelDocs website (after logging in to my profile)?

    2) While purchasing the Air-tickets, again last name is mandatory.Hence what convention should i use for first name and last name while booking the tickets since the police officer at the entrance of Indian airports usually match the ticket name as is with the passport name?

My given name is Ramanathan and no surname in my passport. On 22rd April 2013, I flew by Emirates with my surname as Jagannathan & given name as Ramanathan. I had 3 hours halt at Dubai. There was no problem in reaching Dallas USA.
But in 2007, while coming to USA, I took American Airlines from Delhi to Chicago (POE) and took connecting flight to DFW Dallas. My ticket was with the given name and surname. While boarding at Delhi, there was no problem but while taking the connecting flight the TSA at Chicago check in counter refused to allow me to go through security check. Then I sought the help of American Airlines staff who managed to send me for the security check through another TSA.
I have traveled to USA 4 times always with my given name and surname.
      The lesson learnt is
If your POE is the final destination, then nothing to worry. If your POE is not the final destination, then you need to be ready to face problem depending on the TSA.
      Good Luck

          Hi All,

I started this thread earlier and just wanted to share my experience since my Father-in-law arrived in US without any issues. If last name is missing in Passport and the entire name appears in first name or given names then while filling DS-160, kindly ensure that you put the given name in passport as is in Last name section and first name as FNU. This is important because i filled two DS-160 forms for safety, one with FNU as first name and other with passport given name as first name. They did not accept the later and luckily i had a DS-160 with FNU.

Regarding booking of tickets, i checked with airlines (in my case it was Lufthansa). They requested me to put "MR" as first name and his entire name as in passport into the Last name section. As you know the boarding pass looks like Lastname/First name, my father-in-laws name was visible clearly and did not face any issues while travel. I have also seen some airlines recommending placing space in first name to go thru the form submission. In any case dont use FNU as first name while booking tickets as that might create a confusion. It would be wise to check with airlines before booking and they would suggest a suitable method. Also these cases are very common for the airlines and they have a solution for it.

I hope all questions are answered.
