  • Old Passport second digit misspelled in new passport

    Hi,

My father had one passport issued in 1977 which got expired. Now he got a renewed passport. However, the second letter of the old passport is misspelled in the new passport(where the old passport number is written). The old passport had 1(number) in the second digit but the new passport has I(alphabet) at the place where old passport number is written.

I have to fill DS-160 form for him. Will this create an issue? Shall I ask him to get the old passport number correct.

    Help highly appreciated. Thanks !

Did he have a US visa on the old passport? If not then Embassy will anyways not have that passport details in their system.

In DS-160 form, details about old passport is not asked so this is not be a problem. Visa officer will ask for old passport only if he was issued a US visa earlier so that they can verify the number of times he traveled to the US.

If there is no hurry then your father can always check at the passport office if this is an error and see how much time it would take for this correction. In case this is not an error or the turnaround time is short then he can get it changed. Better safe than sorry.

Having said that there should no problem with the mistake in old passport number.
