  • B2 visa denied. Reapplying (24 years old)

Hi. I went for my interview on July 12th and was rejected under 214(B) due to no strong family ties (which isn't true but I did give the impression that I don't have ties so it's my fault).

I am reapplying and my next interview is on August 16th.

I'm going on a short 12 days vacation to visit my younger sister in September. I've booked my flight tickets early this year in March. I have just recently started working at my mother's company. She's been running it for 23 years and it will be passed down to me when she retires. My mother is a single mother and she relies on me to take care of her and the future of her business.

What are the chances of me getting my visa approved?

There is a very remote chance that your visa will get approved in August. (I hope I am wrong)

Ideally you should have waited for at least 6 months if not a year before applying again. 1 month gap between 2 interviews is too short for a Visa Officer to believe that your situation would have changed. If anything it maybe seen as a desperate attempt to go to the US.

Can you post Q&As from your last interview?

I am reapplying again because I don't want to waste the flight ticket I've purchased (I've got a return ticket as well). I know chances are high that I will be rejected but I'm going to try anyway.

      Q&A:

Why are you going to US?

      - To visit my sister in Pomona.

      How long will you stay?

      - 2 weeks.

Where are you planning to visit?

      - I only have Disneyland in my mind right now. (I forgot to mention I planned to go camping in Yosemite and Lake Tahoe)

      Do you have a job?

      - I have an online business (This was a temporary job I did while taking care of my sister who gave birth on June 15th. I was suppose to start working for my mother)

How much do you earn and how long have you been doing this job?

I make $1500 and I have only recently started this job. (Didn't mention that it was temporary)

Where did you work before and for how long?

I worked at a bank for 5 months.

      Are you single?

      - Yes. (Would it have been different if I mentioned that I'm living with my mother who is a single mother and relies on me to take care of her?)

I understand why they rejected my application. I can see where I did wrong.

It is most likely that they will reject my next application but I am hoping I'd have a chance to clarify some things.

Ah, I don't mind the fee as long as I try. =) Plus, I've already paid for it. Even if I have the slimmest chance, I'll try anyway since seeing my little sister is a big deal to me.

This is how you should have ideally answered

Why are you going to US?
            - To visit my sister and for tourism

            How long will you stay?
            - 2 weeks

Where are you planning to visit?
            - Pomona where my sister stays, Disneyland and camping in Yosemite & Lake Tahoe

            Do you have a job?
            - Yes, I have an online business and I earn 90000 (Never answer income in USD)

How much do you earn and how long have you been doing this job?
            - I earn 90000 and I have only recently started this job which is temporary. In fact my mother runs XYZ business which is into ABC from which we earn XX lacs per year. After I am back from my vacation I will be joining her business which eventually will be managed by me since I am the only child with her in India

Where did you work before and for how long?
            - I worked at a bank for 5 months on a temporary basis after which I took up this new job

            Are you single?
            - Yes I am single and stay with my mother who is a single mother and relies on me to take care of her

There could be few more reasons why your visa was rejected:
            - You said your purpose was to meet your sister but also added later on probing that you will visit Disneyland. Be very clear with your intention and purpose of visit
            - You are single and dont have a stable job
            - If your income is INR 90000 per month then it is fine, if it is INR 90000 per year and you are self sponsoring then its a big problem. Your sister or your BIL should be sponsoring
            - Questions like Do you have a job, How much do you earn and how long have you been doing this job, Where did you work before and for how long and Are you single were asked to establish if you have strong ties with India or not. For all these, your answers were weak and hence rejected under 214b

You must always be honest and to the point but you can also be more descriptive. Following are few things which establish your ties with the country (If you have one)
            - Own house / property
            - Good stable job
            - Good salary
            - Established business
            - Parents to take care of

Whenever you answer about income, you can always mention a mix of all of the above whichever is applicable for you.

Since you have already paid there is no harm in trying. All the best!

This is super helpful. Thanks a lot. If *****ally they do approve my visa, I have you to thank for. =) Although honestly, my chances are close to nil. Haha. Thanks anyway!

Hi all. Just want to say that my visa is approved today. To those who said there's no chance, well, there you go.

For any of you who were rejected, don't hesitate to try again at the earliest if you think you deserve it and have all that you need to convince the VO of your strong ties. (wouldn't recommend it but try if you want)

                  ^_^

Ah sure thing! The VO asked me mostly family related questions.

                      1. Why are you going to the US?

                      - Visiting younger sister in Pomona & going sightseeing with her.

                      2. How long are you going to stay?

                      - 13 days.

                      3. What is your sister doing in the US?

                      - Studying in x college.

                      4. What do you do?

                      - Work at mother's company. She runs a X business, which I will take over eventually.

                      5. You did a cosmetic business before?

                      - Explained.

                      6. How long has your mother been doing the business?

                      - 23 years.

                      7. What does your dad do?

                      - Explained. ( also mentioned parents are divorced and is staying with mother )

Do you have any close relatives in the US besides your sister?

                      - No.

I think that's it. Honestly, I didn't think she would approve my visa since she looked to be very strict and she was typing a lot. I don't think it depends so much on luck (just a tiny bit) but explain where you feel needs explanation. A lot of people say 'give straight, short answers' but if it didn't work for you the first time, explain more about your situation the next time so the VO will get a clearer picture of it. ( I know my answers seem short but I did explain a bit, I shortened it for this ). Also, expect the worst. xD I went in there thinking I would be rejected. It helps ease up your stress (if any).
