Query regarding Passport submission and withdrawl

I am going to Canada for my studies on 22 aug. On the advice of my travel agent i have applied to USA tourist visa so that i can visit USA in my vacations.
I have got a 6th Aug interview appointment at the Mumbai consulate.
Now my question is that-
If my visa processing does not finish in 2-4 days can I ask them for the return of my passport, because i have my Canada flight on 22nd Aug.
How long will they take to return my passport?
Will the processing continue without my passport? If yes, what happens if i am in Canada at that time, along with my passport?
What is the average processing time? How long should i wait before requesting my passport?
Will they tell me the outcome of the processing at the end of interview itself?

If you are travelling to Canada for studies and planning to visit US later in the year for vacation, ideally you should have applied for US tourist visa in Canada at that time.

But now that you have already applied and considering that you are a student, there is no reason why your case will go for administrative processing. You will get to know the status immediately and if your visa is granted you will get your passport within 3 days. If you are based out of Mumbai then you will receive your passport on the 2nd day.

In fact if you don't opt for courier service, within 2 days you will receive an SMS that your passport is ready and you can go and collect your passport in person.

Reason

I did not apply for the US visitor Visa in Canada because the nearest Embassy or Consulate is located in a different city(Vancouvar) at a distance of 350km from my university. So considering the fact that i currently stay in Mumbai near the Embassy I thought it would be more convenient to apply for visa here in my home country.
