  • Visa for Children without parents visa

    Hi,

    I wanted to apply US Visitor Visa for my Niece, who currently lives in India. My niece age is 12 yrs and we are planning to check the possibilities of applying visiting visa for her without having visa for her parents. Could you please help me whether it is possible to apply visa for my niece with this situation. or is it mandatory that we should apply visa for her parents as well?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Trivedi

    Not necessary for parents. She can apply through drop box( no interview), since she is less than 14.
    Sometimes they call the kids for interview after applying through drop box in which case parents will have to accompany her to her interview.
    Consent of both parents is required for her to get the visa.

      Thank you for the response on this. I looked into the given link, it does says that "Valid visa copy of the same visa category of either of the parents in which the child is applying" under supporting documents. isn't mandatory that parents should be applying or holding a visa?

      Thanks,
      Trivedi

        Your concern is correct. I dug deeper , and this is the final takeaway;

        If your child under 14 wants to use the drop box ( no interview) , the requirement is that at least one parent must have a visa in the same category.
        If parents do not have and do not want that visa , the child will have to attend the interview with at least one parent and consent from the other parent.

        Anyway, children using drop box are frequently called for the interview with parents irrespective of whether parents want the visa or not.

        Read this from US embassy new delhi FAQ webpage;

        *My child needs a visa. Do my wife and I have to attend the visa interview with our child?*

        $Yes. Both parents should attend the visa interview with their child if possible. Where one parent is unable to attend the visa interview with the child, the absent parent should provide a letter to their wife or husband that states they have no objection to the child’s application for a visa.$

          Hi,

          Did that convert to success for you. I am in the same boat, we are trying to apply for my niece's US tourist visa and parents have been called for the interview. Can you please tell me what kind of questions did they ask when the parents were interviewed?
