  • Are originals of sponsorship documents (passport, salary statement) better?

    Hi,
I work in a research lab in MA on J1 visa and will be visiting India for business. I want to take this opportunity to sponsor my parents' visit visa. They were denied at the first attempt in 2012 under 214(b). My father is retired and mother is homemaker. They live comfortable middle class life from their savings and support from us in Ahmedabad. I have 2 year home return requirement on my J1 visa and actually open to returning to India at the end of J1 in August 2014. I will appreciate your inputs on the following:

    * In DS-160, there is a section titled "Explain" under Previous US travel -> Visa refusal. What should we explain there? Can we use that space to list the strong family and economic bonds that my parents have with India? Is it OK if it is about 15 sentences long. We made a silly mistake last time - I sent I-134 to my parents, but in DS-160 said that parents will be paying for the trip. The officer never asked to see I-134 and denied after just a few questions about occupations of my parents. I want to make sure that I convey the real picture through DS-160 this time.
    * Since I will have all the originals of the sponsorship documents with me (passport, birth cert, drivers license, salary slips, bank statement); is it a good idea to provide the originals to my parents at the time of interview to demonstrate my presence in India? Out of the sponsorship documents, what do consular officers want to keep on record and what do they return? I want to avoid the hassle of going to notary, if possible.
    * Is there a health insurance plan we can buy for their trip with 15 or 30 day return policy. My reasoning is that I want to demonstrate to the consular officer that I know the costs involved in supporting my parents and can afford them. If they are denied visa again, I want to return the unused policy.
    * How does my visa status and sponsorship impact my parent's application? Does the fact that I am here on temporary visa work in favor or against my parent's visitor visa? I would think that if someone does not have a sponsor in foreign country or other means to survive, they will naturally go back home. I am thinking of listing this as the strongest reason for my parents to return. Good idea?

    Thanks in advance
    eastbound.

    1. Just mention that they were rejected under 214(b).
    2. Send the original sponsorship documents. They don't keep any of them and will be returned immediately.
    3. No. Buying such health insurance in advance does not help at all in visa outcome. Buy the insurance after visa is approved.
    4. You should be in legal status and that is all matter. Anything beyond that does not matter.
