  • Immigration in India

I have travel ticket to US in Air India flight with following itinerary.

Departing from Chennai International Terminal and Arriving at Delhi International Terminal (T3)
Departing from Delhi International Terminal (T3) to Chicago, US

Where will I have immigration in India? Chennai or Delhi?

When I called Air India customer care, one person was telling as Chennai and another was saying Delhi.

If anyone has travelled in this route recently, please clarify. Thanks.

      Hello, Vijay.

Immigration check takes place in that leg of the journey which is International. I.e: Hypothetically, if you were planning to go to New York from Chicago (after Chennai to Delhi), your immigration check would take place in Chicago as that is the International leg of the journey. On subsequent flight to New York, you would be treated as a Domestic passenger.

      I hope this helps.

I am not a professional. These are my personal thoughts.

      Cheers,

Question is departure clearance in India. I am heading to US from Chennai via Delhi.

I am boarding in international Airports in both Chennai and Delhi and hence this question.

          Hello, Vijay.

If Delhi is your last stop in the country, then immigration should be in Delhi.

          Personal Opinion.

          Hope this helps.

          Cheers,

Thanks Natty. That is my understanding as well.

But my doubt is will I be able to board the flight in international airport in Chennai without going through Immigration?

Most of the answers are correct in general. In US, there is a definite regularity regarding where immigration formalities occur. However, that is not the case in India as there are several inconsistencies.

I believe it will be in Chennai in this case. Those Air India flights that get passengers from all over the country and then put them in Delhi Chicago flight have to do immigration formalities at the starting airport.

Just think about it like this. If you are traveling Mumbai - London - New York, you will do nothing in London. Just like that, you will do nothing in Delhi, except Chennai and Delhi are in the same country.

Thanks Admin. I am getting your view.

Sad part is Airline customer care people are inconsistent with their answers to create more confusions.
