Carrying gold items to US & back to India.

my parents are going to visit me this Oct for my delivery. They are also bringing gifts for me & the baby which are gold items. And they are planning to take them back with them as I will be visiting India in a few months later next yr. Is it good to declare these gold items in India so that they wont have any difficulty to carry them back to India. So Is there a way they can declare these gold items in India & let them know that they will bring them back to India so the Indian customs wont bug them later? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
p.s: The total items wouldnt cost more than 4000$
