Honeymoon trip to Italy

Me and my fiancee (both Indian passport holders) are currently on a F-1 visa working in the US on OPT. We are getting married next year and are planning to visit Italy on the way back from India. We have our H-1B visa processed and will be getting our visa stamped while in India. I would like to know about the schengen visa process for Italy. Do we need to go to the Italian embassy designated to our current city of residence or can we do it online? We already have our tickets booked and understand that we can only apply for the visa 90 days before the date of travel. What documents do we need to take for the visa interview if we have to go in person? Can somebody tell us their experience in a similar situation?
