  • Trying for mother-in-law's visitor visa for 2nd time, need some guidance

    Hi,
My mother-in-law went for visa stamping this year in July at Mumbai consulate but she was denied visa then. She is a widow, working full-time as a Banker in a bank. She has a son, who is married and a daughter who is currently in US from past 1.5 years. I am sponsoring her trip to the United States. We are planning for her visa stamping again in a month. I have couple of questions on which i need some guidance.

    1. Should she self sponsor or should I sponsor her? If she self sponsor how much balance she needs to show?

    2. She was not given any slip last time; the VO just said sorry we cant give you visa and returned her passport. During her second interview if the VO asks her if there is any change in situation from last time what would be an appropriate answer?

    3. Is there anything else that can be done which can increase her chances of getting visitor visa?

These are the questions which were asked by the visa officer in her last interview.
    1. Why are you going to US ? – For tourism and to visit my daughter and son-in-law
    2. What does your son-in-law does in US ? – He is working with XYZ company
    3. Have you traveled to any other foreign country before ? – Yes I have been to China
    4. Why did you go to China? – My son-in-law and daughter were there in China before coming to US. I had gone to visit them
    5. Where your son-in-law did his visa stamping for the first time? – In Chennai
    6. Can you show me his petition documents? – She showed the documents to him
    7. With whom are you traveling to US? – I am travelling alone
    8. Where is your husband? Is he not here with you? – No he is not there
    9. Not there means he is not here with you or he is not travelling with you? – No he is not there. He passed away. The officer said sorry and returned her passport.

Widows usually have a hard time getting a visitor visa.
Especially, traveling alone, there is a high suspicion she may not return.
There are several posts where widows have been denied 3-4 times.

Is she living with her son or living alone?

If her son's family is earning well, she can plan a trip with them
that can increase the chances. For that, son must be well settled having good income and
    some history of foreign travel.

If that is not possible, the best she can do is try again and again, she may succeed.
She can mention that her job at the bank is ongoing and ask for a short stay matching the leave at the job.

For self funding balance is not important. Good Income is . If she is earning like 10 lacs /yr , she can go ahead and
show self funding. It will be a point in her favor.
