is invitation letter mandatory for visitor visa?

Hi
My mother is applying for a visitor visa and had stated in her DS- 160 that she is paying for the trip on her own .
She did provide our home address as the address where she will be staying in the US.
Does she still require an invitation letter from us?
Her OFC appointment is on Monday the 28th of October - so a quick response will be greatly appreciated!!

Yes, she does. Self funding of the trip frees you from sending her an affidavit of support and financial documents.
But to prove to the officer that she is visiting you, she requires an invitation on your letter head , and a copy of your visa status in US.
And something proving that she is your mother like a birth certificate or a copy of your passport with her name on it.

These days they do not ask for many documents but you never know. It is better to be safe than sorry.
