B1 refused? but why

I applied for B1 visa to perform gurbani kirtan at US. Gurdwaara sahib management sponser me.

During my interview .he said you need to apply R1 visa. My concern is i just want to visit US for one month not for long stay.

Do i ask for R1 visa sponser from Us gurudwara management?

Why i get refused? Any help or suggestikn

Certain religious activities like prayer, kirtan are allowed under B1. I think the officer may be misinformed.
Or it is also possible that he denied you the visa due to lack of ties to home country ( young age, single status, low income etc)
and gave you the R1 reason.
