  • Meaning of stars on Visa

Hi, my family of 4 all have B1/B2 multiple entry visas valid for 5 years. On my visa and my daughter's visa there are two stars (or asterisks) under the picture on the visa. On their mother's visa and my other daughter's visa there is only one star under their pictures. I have always wondered what those stars (or asterisks) mean. There are no annotations on our visas.

Interesting....Looking back at my parents B1/B2 visas, I see one star in my Dad's and two stars in my Moms visa (and no annotations either). You seem to be very observant

I am taking a guess here by saying that it perhaps could be a security feature of some sort...

Hi Christopher! Actually in my family, the ones with 2 stars were denied once before and the ones with 1 star have not been denied before. We are all still out of the US but I did just come from the US early Sept. (there for two months) and plan to go back there together with the family by late November or early December for a vacation. When I was there I didn't have any problems at my POE (I had 2 stars - whatever that means).

I didn't pay much attention to the 2 stars I had when I first got my visa early this year but when I got the visas of the rest of the family a few days ago, I noticed them.

Anyone know what those stars under the picture actually mean?

In the case of my Mom and Dad they were never denied a visa, but one has one star and the other has two stars. I do not believe the stars are related to how many times you have applied or denied a visa. As long as you have a valid visa, it really does not matter how many stars you have on your passport

My husband wasn't denied before, but he has 2 stars. Mine has 1 star. Guess star doesn't have anything to do with deniel. They have got just for their internal records I guess.

Right now we are in the US. We have entered 2 times into the US. Just couple of formal questions such as 1) where do you work & waht does the company do? Maentime they stamped the I-94. They are very friendly.

Questions for the one with one star:

First time: I came with my husband, so no questions asked for me.

Second time: I came in H1B, When I greeted the officer, he greeted me with smile, then he saw H4 stamping & then H1-B, then he asked 1) Do you work in the IT field. I said yes sir. Then he smiled & said "good for you", meantimeh he stamped my I-94

All these replies got this thread nowhere. Still do not know
                          what the star(s) mean(s).

I do not think anyone knows, unless you work for the state department. I am not sure why people are so concerned even when they got a visa.

                              Meaning of the Stars

                              Hi everybody,
The stars below the photo in the USA visa indicates the "RISK" status when entry the United States, which means that if you have more stars, then you will go through more security check when entering the United States.
The number of stars are determined based on several reasons like: nationality, age, status, sex, countries visited before and others but as I mentioned before, it is only an indication. A lot of two stars have entered the states without any problem especially those who were joining families, but 2 star will probably be interviwed when reaching the states in case they were alone.
Three stars means that security check will happen when arriving to the states but at the end, it depends on the immigrant officer...
