B2 Visa overstayer legal situation

Hi. I would like to know what do visa overstayers do about work permit, tax paying and other issues... I've read here and on other forums there are people overstaying for years, they work, pay taxes, have bank accounts, even get married... how is this possible? I'm asking specifically about B2 visa (tourist).

What you are asking about has become harder and harder to accomplish. Years ago, overstays could get SSN's without much trouble, or if in Adjudication for overstay, might be allowed to obtain Work Authorization on a temporary basis.

Nowadays, unless you manage to prolong your stay with an asylum claim or marry a U.S. citizen and start your conversion paperwork, you cannot legally obtain an SSN or permission to work.
