  • Chances of getting accepted for a B-2 Visa

Hi, I'd like to find out the chances of me getting a B-2 visa. I'm a South African citizen living in Ireland and plan on visiting the US for 2-3 weeks. I am a student at a music school in Dublin. I have a cousin in St. Louis but did not put his details on the DS-160, instead put a male (unrelated) friend's contact details on the form. Will that work against me?

I doubt that putting address of a friend on the DS-160 will work against you, but your age, gender and nationality might. For a visitor visa application, there is an assumption that single applicants are at risk of overstaying an allowable visitor visa time (90 days or 6 months), to marry or seek employment, i.e., intent to immigrate.

I can't provide any citations or proof, but I believe that the current high level of emigration from South Africa would lead any U.S. Embassy or Consulate to expect visitor visa applications to be a prelude to finding a way to resettle in the U.S. Your current student status and proof of problem-free residency in Ireland should be emphasized on your application and during your interview.
