There are many threads here which explains clearly how to fill the surname in DS 160 if you don't have a surname in passport. I filled for a friend of mine with details as below.
IN PASSPORT
Surname .......... (Blank)
Given name. Xxx yyy zzzz
In DS 160 I filled as follows.
Surname : Xxx yyy zzzz
Given name : FNU.
The DS 160 confirmation came with name as Xxx yyy zzz, FNU.
What baffles me is that my friend showed me a confirmation for another person last year who doesn't have surname didn't have FNU. So are they so particular with using the FNU. Should I change it again now that he got an appointment in couple of weeks.
