Invitation Letter from Employer for B2 visa

Hi friends,
Do I need to provide Invitation Letter from my employer while applying for a B2 visa for my wife who would be accompanying me on business travel? Is it mandatory?
Or, is it sufficient if I provide a letter to consulate requesting a B2 visa for my wife and that she would be accompanying me on my business travel?
