  • My daughter's dad wants to visit us here, do we have a chance?

Hello everyone, I am really nervous that we have no hope. My daughter's father lives in Costa Rica, we have visited Costa Rica one month a year for the last three years. Her dad wants to visit us here this time, but is thinking of staying for 3 months so he can really get to spend time with his daughter and get to know her country. He makes an average Costa Rican income of about $650USD per month and is self employeed, not enough income to not get a sponsor. He does own a small piece of land and a car. He will be staying here and/or with a friend who lives nearby and has an extra room. His parents will be giving him some money, he has been saving some money so we feel he has enough to visit. I don't make enough money to sponsor him. My mother lives near but is disabled and a senior living in SSI, so she can't sponsor. My dad and I don't get along, though her MIGHT qualify (he has a lot of assets but not much money or income at the moment.) I have a family friend that would probably sponsor him, but I am not sure a family friend could! It seems so difficult! Do we have a chance? Any advice? If he has a place to stay how much money do you think the authorities want to see that he or the sponsor has? And is the sponsor liable for anything other than paying back the government if he receives assistance during the 90 day VISA?

sponsorship is a secondary issue. First he must have strong income and a stable occupation in costa rica to get a visitor visa.

How old is his daughter? Is she a US citizen? Are you the biological mother? if yes, were you not married? Are you a US citizen?

Our daughter is 7 with dual USA/Costa Rica citizenship. I am the biological mother. We weren't married (Though have considered it) and he has never been here. I am a US citizen. He started a new business in Nov of 2013 and says it seems to be improving.

For a visitor visa an intent to return home is a must . But with both daughter and you US citizens, the embassy will never believe he will return .
So a visitor visa is out of the question, you should not even think about it.

If you think about getting married to him, you can get him here fast on a permanent visa. that seems to be the only way right now for him to enter US.

Oh, we aren't getting married now. So sorry, I wasn't being clear. We had considered marriage before so that he could come visit when we were still romantically interested... He now has two very young children in Costa Rica and lives with them and the mother as well as some other family. We've stayed with them a couple times. Is that enough reason to return? And if so, what about the financial issues?

he has good family ties at home but having a US citizen daughter in US is something heavily against his visitor visa. He will have to mention her in the form.

Well thats sort of sad. I mean we visit there every year, it seems that it should only be natural (and cheaper, i.e. lost wages, double the travel expense for us) that he come visit at least once, but yeah, I know, they are paranoid about people over-staying. Thanks for your input. If anyone else has a thought I'd love to hear. I am still wondering about financials. I guess the daughter and our low wages puts us at high risk of not getting one.
