  • Parent planning to visit 3rd time

    Hello,
I was planning to invite my parent to visit me in 2014. My parent visited me twice in 2012(3 months 8 days) and 2013 (5 months 18 days). The first time at port of entry(Chicago) my parent wasn't asked many questions. But the second time, at port of entry (Houston), my parent was asked why she was visiting consecutive years and was requested for additional questioning in the USCIS office at Houston. This was for half an hour after which USCIS was convinced and gave her 6 month period of stay. This year I was planning to invite her again for about 4-5 months. But based on 2013 port of entry experience I am a little worried about this.
Would the right choice be to skip this year ? or choose a different port of entry (if that matters in any way). 2014 will probably be my last year in US and thus wanted my parent to visit here.

    Appreciate any advice!

    Thanks!

      Hi,
She left for India in 2nd week of July 2012 and came back to US in third week of Apr 2013.
She then left in 2nd week of Oct 2013 back for India.

I don't know of many folks who had their parents visiting consecutive years. Thus want to know what to expect on her third visit at the port of entry.
(sorry forgot to mention she does have a 10 year multiple entry VISA)

      Thanks!

It is unusual. visiting Consequent years was never an issue before, only the interval between two visits and the length of the last visit.
an 8 month interval is considered good.
May be there is a change in trend. Maybe it was just one off thing. Did she mention to them initially that she wanted 6 months?

Keep the interval as max as you can. If you will be spending the whole year in US, let them come in mid 2014. Port of entry does not matter.
Also, mentioning full 6 months as required stay at port of entry irks the officers.

I guess she would have answered how long she was going to stay in US as a little less than 6 months. This was because the return tickets which were about 5 and a half months future dated..

I believe having a return ticket is mandatory for tourists? How should she tackle the question "How long are you going to stay in the US ?"

          thanks!
