My sister got a 10 year multiple entry to the US...
We got her a round trip ticket where she will return back home in 9 months.
Is that ok? I don't know the limitations of the length of stay given to tourist per visit! But we just want to have her around for Easter Sunday, memorial weekend, 4th, thanksgiving , Christmas & new year because we haven't spent those occasion for 30+ years with her.

A visitor visa entrant is given his allowable stay time upon entry to the U.S. It is usually 3 months or 6 months, but with one extension usually allowed.

If you are getting her a 9-month RT ticket, you should be sure that she has an option to return sooner than a full 9 months after arrival.

it is not ok. they look at your return ticket to judge your intent. for them 3-4 months should be enough for a visit

and showing a 9 month stay beomes too long. they give 6 month max anyway.
I suggest you change the return ticket to 5 months.

Thank you for this info, I did not know this when I bought the ticket. She has already left & in a few hours she will land in the US with her ticket that shows a return flight after 9 months.
She has the option to change her return flight with the airlines.
Will they still allow her to stay & make the changes to her return to whatever they granted my sister? Or she has to go straight back to the & make the changes @ the country of origin ?

you should have posted this question before she left.

Mentioning 9 months shows her intent to stay very long which is not good for US admission.
When they ask her the duration of her stay , she should mention a period less than 6 months .
The return ticket can show up in their system , change it from here if you can.

Thank you. I have changed her return flight with the airlines to end of August which is less than 5 months. She will land in the US In a couple of hours! Will immigrations see this new changes even if her ticket shows her return flight is 9 months after? There is no way we can tell her about this new change!
I just hope this would help! Although we would like for her to stay longer.

There is no way that the Immigration staff will see the ticket return date has been changed, unless they access the airline ticket database.

This is the kind situation where the outcome is based on a "maybe" scenario.

Thank you for the reply, my sister landed safely and she is with us. She was given 6 months to stay with us. We might try to get her an extension if she wants to stay with us although she might want to spend Christmas with her 2 daughters' families in Sydney Australia. I was hoping for 9 months so she can spend a month with each of her brothers & sisters in the US. I'm glad she's back in the US whee she went to school after being away for 46 yrs
