Embassy for Schengen visa

Hi,

I'll be travelling to Europe this summer, visiting Denmark, Spain, France and a few other countries with my main destination being France and Spain.
However, I'll be taking a flight from the US and landing in Denmark to begin my trip.

I am unsure as to which embassy I should be going to since the page says that we can either go to the country which is our port of entry or the country
where we'll be spending most of our time i.e. main destination.

So, can I choose France over Denmark? I ask this because the Denmark embassy is only in NY which is really far for me, whereas there are more options
for France.
