  • Surname problem

    Hello Peace999,

My name in passport is Sushil kumar S/o Ram Singh (not real names). I dont have any surname on passport and also on any of my certificates .

Is that a problem in visa interview? Will they reject my visa? My father also does not use any surname. If I go to passport office to split my name they may ask what is your surname or why you want kumar as your surname when your father is Singh.

I'm asking this because a friend has told me that I will be in trouble when my visa interview comes up and they will deny me visa.

Please help. will this cause any problems for me when I go for iv.

what visa are you applying for?

Also, do you have a municipal birth cert.? if yes, what names of you and your parents are mentioned on it?

no surname anywhere even in munlicipal cert. or school certificates. that is true for my father's/mother's name as well.

I have put last name as kumar
first name as sushil in ds 160 while regisstering my self on us traveldoc it was asking for last name and I could not left it blank because it application was not going through.
      so on ds160 it is

      Name: Kumar,sushil visa B1/B2

visa will not be denied just for this reason.

US embassy states that if there is no surname on your passport they will print the visa with all your first names on your passport as surnames and place
the first name as blank and FNU ( first name unknown) . this is because they need a surname for every applicant to search in the database.

For a visitor visa, it will not be an issue but later on if you wish to go for immigrant visa ( green card) , I suggest you get it corrected in your passport.

If it is only a visitor visa you want , just let it be as it is.

Send me a personal message on this forum giving me your and your parents' exact names as in your municipal birth cert. , then I can suggest more.
