  • Can I bring my sister to US for her delivery

    Hi

    Im a GC holder and my sister is an indian citizen residing in Dubai. She is pregnant, I would like to have her with me for her delivery. I have two kids who are in school and there is no one else to take care of her during her delivery. While me going to Dubai is an option. I cannot go for a longer period leaving my kids here in the US. Since they are in school taking them with me wud affect their studies.

    I would like to know if I can bring my sister her for her delivery and are there insurance options that cover her delivery expenses here. Please share your information here.

    Thanks in advance

    if she still has to apply for a visitor visa to US, then they will not grant it for this purpose.
    Also, if she is visibly pregnant in advanced stage, even if she has the visa, the officers at POE may not
    let her enter.

    A lot depends on her stage of pregnancy and what are her ties to UAE; husband , work?

    Must read this from US customs FAQ;

    Can I visit the U.S. while pregnant and what are the risks involved?

    Although there are no specific regulations prohibiting pregnant foreign nationals from entering the U.S., entry is allowed or denied at the discretion of the admitting U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer. If the CBP Officer determines that you are likely to become a ward of the government (meaning that the government must provide medical care because you do not have medical coverage), you can be denied entry. When determining if you will be allowed to enter the U.S., CBP Officers take into consideration the date your child is due for delivery and the length of time you intend to stay in the U.S. In addition, they want evidence that you have sufficient medical insurance to cover any medical necessities while you are in the U.S. and that you intend to return home. If it is determined that you do not have sufficient medical insurance to cover any unexpected or expected medical care while in the U.S., you can be denied entry. Additionally, if you are pregnant and entering the U.S. at a border port of entry via vehicle, be aware the radiation detection portals deployed at the ports do not emit any radiation, and do not present a hazard to you and your unborn child.

      To add to Peace's response....if obviously pregnant when applying for or entering the U.S., your sister will be perceived as planning to deliver in the U.S. in order to obtain "anchor baby" benefits in the future. Your expectation that insurance can be purchased to cover the delivery costs does not take into account "preexisting condition" riders, or outright refusal to insure if the company knows she is pregnant.

      I know that you would rather hear positive news than the "downside," but it's best you know the possible barriers in advance.

      If being with family is important to you and your sister, perhaps her return to India to be with family members there would be a better alternative plan.

        thanks a lot Ray & Peace. I also thought of these possible constraints in her arrival here. im the first person responsible to take care during her delivery. That is why thought if there would be an option to bring her down here rather than me visiting just for a few weeks.

        we also had a feel that it is going to be a herculean task. Thanks a lot again to both of you. Appreciate your replies.
