Newark Airport Question.

Hello All,
If this is not the correct forum please re-direct me. My parents and grandparents would be coming over this July and I have specific question about the Newark airport. They are travelling thru United airways and would be landing at some gate in Terminal C. Here are my questions;

1) Once immigration is done (on level 3) do they have to collect their bags (from level 1) and proceed for customs OR since they have a connection from Newark, their bags would be at different location?

2) After customs are they out of the security area? Do they have to go thru security again?

1. In their case, regardless of the onward connection , their bags are booked to the first port of immigration , not port of destination.

So, after immigration, they will have to collect their bags from the conveyer belt for the ariline they arrived in Newark by. Collect the bags , go thru customs and ask for the connecting
airines baggage counter. It is usually located close by so they do not have to haul their baggage for a long distance.Re- Book the baggage by showing the boarding pass and then proceed to their connecting terminal.

2. yes, once you are thru immigration and customs , you are in a common public area leading out to the city.
Then, they will have to go thru security for the domestic connecting flight.
