Can H1 visa-holder apply for tourist visa?

Hi All,

Can a person having a valid work-permit (H1 visa) apply for a US tourist visa when in India? If so, then on getting the tourist visa, what happens to the status of the H1 visa, does it still stay valid? Can the person hold the H1 visa along with the tourist visa?

Appreciate any help on this.

Why do you want a tourist visa when you are authorized to work? If its just for tax purposes you can NOT pay taxes here but can still come into the country. You can pay India taxes..

I am confused of the request in the first place.

The situation is like this: I am working in India but holding a valid US work-visa. Now if I want to visit US as a tourist with my family, can I go ahead and apply for a visitor visa?

You can apply for Visitor visa, but most probably u will be asked on why u didn't go when u had H1B and ur H1B will be cancelled without prejudice.
