  • I-134 Questions

Hello. I’m filling out an I-134 to sponsor my mother-in-law for a B-2 Tourist Visa. I have a few questions about filling it out:

    1) Question #7 – I have a 401K, IRA, and IRA CD. Do I include these? If so, where? It’s not clear whether I should add those or not. My income is far above poverty level and I am showing about $50K of real property (jewelry, cars). Should I just forget about the retirement accounts?

    2) Question #9 and #10 – I am a U.S. Citizen and have previously sponsored my wife for her green card, which she has now. It’s not clear to me whether I am supposed to include her on 9 & 10 or not. <https://www.immihelp.com/form-i-134-affidavit-of-support-for-usa-visitors-visa/> states that I don’t need to include my wife if I was an H-1 worker and my H-4 wife was included in my green card processing, but does that apply to me? I’m just not sure.
    3) Question #10 – Last year I submitted an I-134 for my mother-in-law and it was denied. I just want to verify that this does not mean that I petitioned for a visa for her, correct? In other words, I do not include my mother-in–law on question 10. Is that right?

Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

Your investment accounts are considered valid liquid assets and should be included in your I-134, which mainly serves as a financial profile.

The value of jewelry and cars is considred "fluff" and would not be given any serious consideraton for sponsorship purposes.

Anyone for whom you have submitted sponsorship documents, which resulted in visas being issued, should be included on the form

Thank you for your quick reply. I'd like to clarify a couple of things please:

Where do I list my retirement accounts (401K, IRA, IRA CD)? The choices are "I have on deposit in savings banks in the United States:" or "I have stocks and bonds with the following market value…". The IRA is with Bank of America, the IRA CD is with OBA Bank, and the 401K is one of the Federal Thrift Savings Plans (Lifecycle Funds). I suppose the first two would count as on deposit in savings banks? What about the 401K?

I'm still confused about whether to include my wife for Question 10. When I sponsored her, it was for a change of status to Permanent Resident. She was in the USA on a student visa, but it had expired many years earlier. I'm not clear on whether this is categorized as a visa being issued, since it was a change of status that I sponsored her for (based on our marriage).

      Thanks again!

Place value of your retirement accounts in the "stocks and bonds" line, as they are generally reported on broker statments and are usually mutual funds or shares or conservative savings plans.

        List your wife on #10.
