  • Parents visa interview - Mom can't speak english

    Hi folks,
My parents are appearing for B2 visa interview in couple of weeks at Hyderabad US consulate (I am currently in USA). My father can speak english fine, but my mother cannot speak english, she knows only telugu. I have chosen English as language for the interview, can some one please let me know if my father can assist with the translation of questions asked to my mom? Also, how does it work in conveying the answers back to the officer, can my father do that again or ask for a language translator?

Really appreciate if some one can answer, share their success experience in this regard.

    Thanks,
    Suresh

you should have chosen telugu as the language as your mother will be asked questions too. the officer would not like your dad translating for your mother.
Many american officers are fluent in telugu as well, many times this may not be the case.

I strongly recommend calling the stanley center and changing the interview language to telugu.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know off-hand if I can change the interview language of just my mother to telugu and still have both of them attend the visa interview together? I will still check with the center and enquire though.

I just found out that immihelp general instructions say it's fine to have the interview in english and one person can translate for the spouse https://www.immihelp.com/us-visa-app...ence-language/. Just trying to understand more here before i talk to the stanley center, do you know of any example where this wasn't the case?

        Thanks.

I cannot point you to a specific case but it is an obvious thing that they would like to hear from the person they ask.
when you choose telugu it is very likely you will get an officer who knows both english and telugu.
