Uk Passport Validity

My family and I are travelling to Florida in Septmber (13th) returning on the 27th. Both my childrens passports expire 5 months after we return to the uk. We’ve been told by our tour operator that we need to renew the passports so that we have the required 6 months when we return. I'm getting mixed messages about the validity as some say we will be fine and others say not. Can anybody clear this up and hopefully save me having to renew passports when it's not needed?.

The 6 month validity rule is to enter certain countries for certain nationals.
Does not apply to UK nationals for US travel and should not apply when returning home to UK.
