Background - I m the youngest of 3 brothers. My mother is a homemaker staying with one of my brothers. My dad expired 7 years ago, he was in a private company. I m in the US (H1B) and my 2 brothers are in India. We applied for my mother's B2 visa.
Apart from the mandatory documents (Appointment confirmation, appointment schedule, Passport) My mother carried - 1) I-134 (Declaration of her trip sponsorship from me) 2) An application addressed to the consulate General assuring that her sole purpose is to meet me & tour US. And that she will return to India after her approved stay 3) An invitation letter addressed to my mother 4) Her Financial documents (Up to date Bank statements/passbooks, Property papers, Deposit certificates, Investment details) 5) My financial & other documents (Latest pay slips, W2 form, 6 months bank statement, My passport copy - all non-blank pages, H1B extension approved petition copy, DL copy, address proof - utility bill copy, employment letter).
My mother has only cleared high school and that too in local medium. She understands English but cannot reply so well. We had opted for an interpreter (our mother tongue).
On the day of the appointment, she arrived at the consulate on time. And everything went pretty smooth & quick. When she was asked to go to the counter, they realized there were no interpreters available at that time. The VO asked my mother if she would be able to understand and answer some simple questions. My mother said yes.
The VO appeared to be a very nice man and was very courteous with my mother. He was speaking slow and clear for my mother to understand and was really helpful. The interview went on like this:
VO - Why do you want to visit the US
Mother - To meet my son and also tourism.
VO - Good. How may children do you have? Where do they live?
Mother - 3 sons. 2 in India. The youngest son in US
VO - Fine. And do you own a property, here in India?
Mother - Yes
VO - Is it on your name?
Mother - Yes.
VO - Great. And which place do you really wish to visit in US?
Mother - Disneyland
VO (with a big smile) - Thats good. You would love it.
VO - Which city does your son work in the US?
Mother - New York
VO - Thats good. Is he sponsoring your expenses?
Mother - Yes.
VO - Good good. Your visa is approved. And have a nice trip to the States.
Mother - Thank you!
Overall it was a pleasant experience. She told me, she was very pleased at the way it was done and the professionalism/courteousness of the VO.
