  • Sister Visa interview schedule, question on paperwork

We finally received notification that my wife's sister has her interview coming up. Yippee!! We have a couple question on needed documentation. The phone at NVC is not valid or ALWAYS busy. E-mailing them sent me to these forums (!). ARe these forums questions answered by NVC personnel??? Thank you for your help in advance.

The papers sent indicate: “Bring updated Federal income tax information to the interview. If a sponsor filed an I-864 (Affidavit of Support) and provided the NVC with proof of an IRS Federal income tax extension in lieu of a Federal income tax return, bring the sponsor’s most recent Federal income tax return to the visa interview”.

We provided an I-864 (Affidavit of SUpport) during the original application process many years ago and we have never done an income tax extension. Do we need to provide the most recent tax return information (and in what form?) to my sister-in-law prior to and for the interview or do is all the previously sent financial and support information adequate. ??

    2. Along this same subject, the NVC website under “Interview Preparation- Required Documents” indicates that the applicant need to bring several documents, one of which is “Evidence of financial support (e.g. Affidavit of Support). This probably relates to my question 1. above, but is any new/additional “Affidavit of Support” (form I-864) required for the interview or do the original documents submitted with the applications process prior fill this need?

    3. The same website also indicates to bring documents for “Family-based cases: All original documents establishing the relationship between the petitioner and the applicant.” These were provided as part of the application process, so do original and/or additional documents of all these need to be brought by my sister-in-law to the interview process? If so, what exactly needed? The person is a sister of my wife. My wife is a citizen (and I am a native citizen).

The letter sent has several documents indicated and “Document Status Code Definitions” to go with these items. If the code is “Y” then “The NVC sent this form or document to the U.S> Embassy or Consulate”. These do not have to be brought to the interview then as they already have them ?

Any experienced and/or knowledgable input on the above or anything else regarding the process is appreciated!!

If your sister's paperwork was not previously processed by the NVC, with fees paid and initial sponsorship docs submitted, you have to proceed from scratch. Pay the fees for which you are billed , now $120 and $325, then submit a fresh I-864, most recent Federal income tax return from petitioner with supporting documents.

Civil documents must also be sent to the NVC, despite your having sent copies of those with the original petition.

If your sister's case was originally and already processed by the NVC, then maybe retrogressed, but "documentarily qualified," you should still provide updated sponsorship documents and any civil documents which might have expired (police clearance from primary country), completion of DS-260 onine.

      Ray B-
Thank you! Well all of the paperwork was originally supplied to NVC and processed by them. The process started more than a decade ago. A couple years ago we got an e-mail saying everything was approved and that she would get her interview according to the numbers of her country. Now, a few years later we just got the e-mailed letter which states her interview is now scheduled for the beginning of December (in South America). We know she has to bring this letter to the interview, results of a medical exam, police records, two photos.

You say civil documents must be sent to NVC. These were sent originally as part of the process. Do we need to resend them for the interview??

Likewise our tax information, Affidavit of support was originally sent to the NVC before, so do we need to send that now.

Is there any way to still talk to somebody at NVC via e-mail (better for written documentation) or phone??

Your updated message below clarifies the status. You are now having to deal with the interviewing Embassy, not the NVC. An updated I-864 will need to be taken to the interview by your sister, as well as a completed immigrant medical exam. Since you say that civil documents were sent to the NVC years ago she is considered "documentarily qualified," though an updated police report (depending on her country) is expected at the interview.
