My father is going for visitor visa appt in December. Assuming he gets approved, I'm not planning for his travel to US until the April because thats when spring starts and it will be warm enough in Chicago for him to be comfortable. Does this mean he will have only 2 months left on his visa or does the visa period of 6 months start only from the date of entry. Thanks for your help.

That's not true.
Visa stamp is used only to enter the US. You can enter US any time until the last date on the stamp.
Actual duration of stay is determined at the port of entry, as per the date stamped in I-94 form.
Therefore, they can come on last day of visa and can still get 6 months stay.
