  • How soon can i renew B2 visa?

Hi , My dad's visa is expiring in AUG 2016 where as my chances of staying in US till that time is less. I want to get his visa renewed as he will get it for another 10 years.
and the reason i want to get it renewed is that i can give my reference to support his trip . So, how soon before expiration can i get his visa renewed. On US VISA site they mention that you can get it renewed when it is valid but does not says anything about the time period .
Please let me know like is is safe to get it renewed when still 12-14 months VISA is remaining. I have H1-b and he has B2 visa.

You may go for renewal 2 to 3 months before the expiration of the visa. That way you can best use of current visa as there is no guarantee of renewal and renewals also approved based on current conditions and eligibility. Most importantly it depends on how the applicant used his previous visa.

This is my opinion, not a legal advice.

Thanks for the advice. But my main concern is that i might/might not be here in US next year. Thats why i want to get it renewed. Should i take chances to get it renewed? He has been to US only once when he got the visa .Is it a positive or a negative factor?

Over staying, very frequent visits and staying more in the USA than home country all these things comes under abusing the B visa.

Not abusing the visa is a positive thing and will be a positive factor, when applying for renewal.
But, it alone may not influence the decision.

If your status in the USA is going to expire next year, consulate people also aware of it and if you apply much before of the expiration of visa, it may look unnatural.

Going for renewal now or not is your call, because you know your case better than anyone else.

This is my opinion, not a legal advice.

Renewing of the similar visa can be considered under IWP scheme. Please read little bit about it & use this service to get the new visa.

Ideally you should not request for renewal before 2-3 months of visa expiration, however there may be cases when the current visa is unknowingly messed-up & needs renewal (like washed-out, someone mistakenly wrote something on the visa, visa is on another passport & that passport is lost :P).

Chances are pretty high if they parents have B2 visa & they want it to be renewed without any support letter from kids abroad.
