  • DS-160 Self vs Other Sponsorship Query

I have a 10 year multiple entry US Visa issued in 2007 and expiring 2017. I have traveled to US several times for business reasons on that Visa. My Brother, brothers wife, daughter live in US and are permanent residents. I and my wife live and work in India.

Now I am planning a personal visit to US along with my wife. My wife needs to apply for a Visitors B2 visa. She has been working for the last 10 years and we have decided to go by Self sponsorship. She has been to other countries for tourism. Although, in DS160, we have indicated that my brothers family is in US and that we will visit and stay with them, we are going with self sponsorship.

My query is related to DS160:
    1. Should my wife show self sponsorship or show OTHER and put my name (SPOUSE) in there. The reason I ask is because my Salary structure is higher than hers.
    2. If she writes Self sponsorship - does that mean that only her salary/saving will be used to assess affordability? or my salary/savings can still be used.

Of course, when she goes for the interview, she will take my passport and financial documents as well.

    Appreciate any comments or feedback.

You and your wife constitute a family unit and therefore my sense is, if you enter "self-sponsorship" you can enter the total family income (yours + your wife's). At the interview, if asked for income, your wife can tell both her and your income and then say the combined income is xxx.

          Visa Approved

          Visa Granted.

          FYI, Following Qs were asked:
          1. Why do you want to go to US?
          2. Where does your brother in law work and What does he do?
          3. Why did you come to Delhi instead of Chennai, since you stay in Bangalore.
          4. What do you do and What is your salary?

          The interview lasted 2-3 mins.

Among 20-25 people ahead of my wife, except for 1, everyone got the visa and most of the questions were on Salary and personal finance.

          Best.
