  • Foster parents, B2 Visa

    Hi,

The situation is this, my mom's sister and her husband raised me and sponsored for my education and living from my childhood. But they haven't legally adopted me. Are they called foster parents? I am right now in US and would like to invite them here for my graduation ceremony and family visit. I just want to make sure to use the right word (foster) while they apply for Visa. Do they need B2 Visa? Kindly answer my questions.

    Thanks,
    Swaroop

"Foster parent" is a temporary status, usually sanctioned by a government agency, for a temporary caretaker of a child.

Because of the relationship you had with the aunt and her husband, you can casually refer to them as foster parents, but it was probably not a legally recognizable status.

      Hi Ray,

When they go to the embassy to apply for Visa, can they claim to be my foster parents without any legal documentation? I am planning to send an invitation letter to them for my graduation ceremony in which their relation to me should be clearly stated.
I would like to know if I can refer to them as foster parents in that letter without any legal documentation. Thank you so much for the reply.

You can refer to them as foster parents, and they can claim to be foster parents, but without any legal authority from a court or child welfare agency, the relationship of "foster parents" is an informal relationship.

            Foster parents Visa

Hi Swaroop , This is Rakesh here.

I have a same situation as yours. Can you please let me know if you have got your B2 Visa done for your parents.

Please let me know what relationship did you fill in for graduation invitation and in DS 160.

Even i don't have legal documents for adoption. I lost both my parents in my early childhood and then on my mom's sister took care of me without any legal adoption.

            Thank you.
