Married to US citizen status seeker had to leave US for work.

We got married three years ago in the US, applied and approved for i-130 (had to redo application because of USCIS snafu). Were going to apply i-485/864 but US spouse cannot afford to be sponsor at this time. If Canadian spouse goes back to Canada, to a job and place of residence will he be denied entry as a visitor even though he's not seeking to change status?
