  • affidavit of support question

    Hi,
I am inviting a relative to come as a tourist to US. My question is am I responsible for all their expenses only for the duration that I specify in my letter? For example, if this person breaks the law and stays passed their visa, or even is able to extend his visa am I still responsible for their expenses? Any insight is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    M

You are not legally liable for persons coming here on visitor (tourist) visas. You can provide an I-134 to show your ability to cover his expenses, but it has no legal force to tie you to the visitor's expenses.

      Hi Ray B,
Thanks for the reply. There is a section in the i-34 instructions (under sponsor and alien liability) which indicates "if the person you are sponsoring becomes a public charge, the agency that provides the assistance maybe able to sue you the recover the cost of the assistance". I am going to accept all the expense during the three months that I will specify on the i-34, but I don't want to be responsible for any more than that. That's why I am a bit concern.
      Thanks again,
      M

If your gal is here on a visitor visa, the I-134 has no force.

If your gal is here on a K1 visa, your I-134 has "some" legal force for the 90-day visa period.
