New B1/B2 visa app not granted but earlier still valid. Can I still travel to USA?

Hi,

Existing 5 year B1/B2 visa is valid until December 2015 whereas applied for a new visitor visa which was unsuccessful. Officer has not stamped nor canceled the earlier visa. Please help if the candidate can still travel to USA as almost 5 months are remaining in the earlier visitor visa?
