  • Tourist Visa for my Mother in Law (problems)

    Hi Everyone,

I am a US citiczen and my wife is a chinese national and we were married in china last february. She is ready to move to the US however, her father was ill and passed away recently. My wife does not want to leave her mother alone so in order to make my wife's transition to the US easier we would like to allow her mother to visit the US freely. My mother in law had her visa interview the other day and was denied. The consulate only asked her was if her daughter was going with her (yes) and then asked for the daughter's passport. The daughter, my wife has a tourist visa and has visited 3 times this year. They seemed to have spent a lot of time looking at my wife's passport. They then asked for the reason(s) for my wife's visits and also if my wife was married. I'm not sure how honestly she answered those questions but she answered yes, when asked if her daughter is married. I'm not sure if this had anything to do with the denial but, other family members such as aunts, uncles, and cousins were there applying as well for tourist visas. None of them have any intentions of immigrating to the US and can show strong ties to China, such as hukou, bank statements, many proofs of properties, and i suppose proof of employment. The consulate did not even bother reviewing these documents and all of them were outright denied.

    My questions are:

    1) What could of been the flags that got my mother in law denied?
    2) Is there a way around this to help get my mother in law a visa?
    3) When is a good time to try the interview again and what should she do differently the 2nd time?
    4) any other thoughts and/or opinions?

I appreciate all of the feedback you can provide. Thank you!
