  • Valid Green Card but not in US, now is a visitor visa needed?

My mom had a GC issued in 2010 but had gone back to India in 2011 due to family commitments. Now that she wants to visit US for temporary stay, what's the best approach to get a Visa? Is visitor visa a viable option or is there a chance to revive the GC? I didn't get a clear idea by going thru few posts, can you please help?

I read that retaining GC may not be an option and anyway she doesn't want to stay in US for longer. We are OK with a visitor visa but looks like the approval chances are low considering there was a GC earlier. If GC revival (if there's any option) is a possibility, she can consider staying here longer.

GC revival as you call is not possible. She will need to apply for the green card process all over again.

Alternatively, she can try for visitors visa. As she had greencard earlier, that can work both as advantage as well as disadvantage.
Advantage: Even though I had green card and I could stay there forever, I didn't. Therefore, I have no interest in staying forever and will come back.
Disadvantage: By getting greencard, I showed immigrant intent and may change my mind and stay there forever.

In any case, all you can do is try for visitors visa.
