Unpaid Internship Opportunity

Hi,

I am an Indian citizen currently studying in UK. I have a UK student visa till next September 2016 and a Visitors Visa for USA for 10 years. I wanted to know if I can apply for internship opportunities in USA as I need a 3 month credit placement internship for my Masters degree. Can I work on my Visitors visa for a period of 3 months if I only get travel expenses? or if it is unpaid ? Or do I need any special visa for my internship? I understand one needs to apply for J-1 visa in case it is a paid employment but this will be unpaid or minimum expenses paid internship - will that be legal on my current visa status?
