Hello, I've looked for a question similar to the one I have but I found nothing. Just cases of long stay and wealthy parents.
My parents and sister, from Brazil, are coming to visit me for one month only in December. I'm a permanent resident, married to an US citizen.
My parents (dad 75 - retired, mom 65 - housewife) and sister (35, single, no kids, no boyfriend, self employed) got their visas with no problems. The consular officer asked my sister how much she was bringing to the US with her. She answered 2K (but did't specify if it was Brazilian Reais or US dollars).
They are not wealthy and couldn't afford this trip on their own. My husband and I are inviting them on our expenses. I'm sending them a letter to hand to the port of entry officer, explaining why they are coming, when they are leaving, where they are staying and that the expenses are on us.
Now the questions:
- Do they need to bring cash with them when passing through the port of entry?
- Do they hand the letter to the officer as soon as they are called or, do they wait and see what questions he will ask and then, hand the letter? What would be easier?
Our last Christmas together was 5 years ago and I really want them to be able to pass through with no issues! I've heard that they ask for how much money they have in hands, so I need to know if I need to send US$500 to each one just in case...
