  • Issue with surnames

    Hi,

I have a rather unique situation. I am in the US and want to bring my parents here for a visit. They got their passports done in Jan 2016. Now there is an issue with my mom's surname in the passport. Her name in passport is listed as below

    Given Name: ABC
    Surname: DEF

where as it should have been

    Given Name: ABC
    Surname: XYZ

But in my dad's passport, my mom's name is listed correctly, that is
    Given Name: ABC
    Surname: XYZ

Now I am trying to fill in the DS160 for both of them and not sure if this name confusion will cause an issue. Should I apply for reissue of the passport for my mom? Or can we just move forward with filing for a visa? Even if visa gets approved somehow, will this be an issue during immigration at the airport? Please advise.

    Regards,
    Shashi Kumar

I assume ABC DEF was her maiden name (before marriage) & ABC XYZ is the name after marriage.

As per american law, an women is free to choose to keep her maiden name even after marriage. Just ask your parents to keep multiple proofs regarding marriage (like marrige certificate, wedding album, an paper cutting for Advertize mentioning both names belongs to her only.

      Thank you Libra_14!

The catch is ABC DEF is not her maiden name. To give more clarity here are the actual details.

      Actual Name
      First Name: Shobha
      Last Name: Nagalamadaka Subramanyam

      Passport Name
      First Name: Shobha
      Last Name: Nagalamadaka Seshaiah

We got the passport done through a local agent and he used my Dad's last name for my mom as well (Only in my mom's passport). In my dad's passport, my mom's name is listed correctly.

Not sure if anyone has been in a situation like this. I'm regretting reaching out to a local agent for getting the passport done and for not reviewing the application myself before it was submitted.

I would suggest to get the name corrected before applying for visa.

If just in case, VO reject your application, you'll have little less chance to get the visa next time.

        Better to be safe !!
