Question regarding one way ticket via B2 visa

I've booked a one way ticket to San Diego, as I'll be hiking the Pacific Crest Trail this year, which will take me approximately five months. The PCT ends approximately 10 miles into Canada from the USA / Canadian border. This border point is not controlled; however, it's legal to enter Canada via the PCT, as long as you apply and get signed approval from the Canadian Border Services Agency to enter Canada via the PCT - and, of course, that you have the appropriate documentation (passport, visas, etc), which I have. My reason for no onward travel at all is because my application to work in Canada's been approved. I'll need to pick up my work permit from a manned border point, so (according to a Canadian Border Services Agency Officer, which I spoke to), I'll need to make my way to a manned border point in Washington / British Columbia after completing the trail to collect this. So... will I still need an onward flight booked from USA to Canada to be allowed into USA when I fly into San Diego? This will require me going back into the USA simply to get back into Canada.

I have all evidence of my planned hike: my permit to hike the PCT, B2 visa, approved application to enter Canada via the PCT, my letter approving my application to work in Canada and evidence of sufficient funds. The airline website states that I require proof of onward travel, would my documentation above be sufficient as evidence as 'onward travel'? I don't mind booking an onward flight, but I would need the ability to change the date as I am unsure exactly when I will be finishing my hike.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

No, you won't need onwards flight, but will need documentation/visa for Canada in your hand to prove that you will leave USA.

You appear to have your plans in order enough to likely bypass the return ticket requirement. Just be prepared to keep documentation etc handy at border control.
