Need to send original passport for a visa?

I am trying to get visa for my new born. In the checklist it is mentioned that we need to send the original passport. Is it mandatory to send passport original or a notarized version will be enough?

Which visa? Where are you sending it? Visa can be stamped only on the original passport.
