  • Visitor visa for Parents with only child in US

    Hi,

My parents are planning on attending the interview for a tourist visa in May. I am their only child. I would like to know if its a good idea to tell the same in the interview? I would like to know how some one with a similar situation answered for the famous question

How many children do you Have?

    Thanks
    Jai

Having a single child will not disqualify them to get a visa. Ties back to homecountry is the matter.

      jdhondarx,

I am the only child to my parents and they were rejected twice at Chennai for visitor visa. First time the interview was in English and my dad said he could not follow the accent and so he couldn't understand the reason for rejection.

Second time the interview was in my mother tongue and the translator pretty clearly stated that the reason for rejection is that my parents are retired and I, the only child, have GC. Strangely the translator explictly asked if my parents had a daughter, even after declaring that they have only one son.

When I told this to my friend who is also a single child, she said her parents told that they had "another unmarried daughter" living with them and they got 10yrs visa. I am not telling you to lie, but I am presenting two cases with two different outcomes and leave it to you as to which you deem appropriate in your case, with all the risks that come with any decision you take. I did not have any problem sponsoring my in-laws earlier and I thought it would be a breeze. At that time I did not notice the fact that both my in-laws had state Govt. jobs.

      Visachief,
For middle class parents, the only valid ties that seem to work are unmarried daughter(s) or a govenrment job. Sure there are cases who got visas even without such ties and there are cases that got rejected even with such ties, but I feel they are more exceptions than rule.

I have pretty much abandoned my plans of sponsoring them for visa. They were terribly dissapointed for not being able to spend time with my infant son and I don't want to put them through this misery again. I still keep checking this board for any "patterns" of approval/rejection.

        thanks for the response

I dont mind asking them to tell that they have an unmarried daughter in India.
But would that be in record and in future would that cause any problem later on.

        Thanks
        Jai

Never look for temperory gain. Once any statement made and later turned out as an incorrect one, looses credibility of the applicant and create damage in any future attempts.

Jdhondarx, what kind of problems do you envisage? I don't see any. The persons appearing for the interview are not testifying in a court of law under oath to be prosecuted for perjury for lying. As a sponsor you are not lying so there can be no affect on you. If the persons appearing for interview are lying and even if they are caught (remote possibility) the worst that can hapopen is visa denial. Well, next time whne they go for interview they can say that their answers were wrongly typed into the consulate's computers "Lost in translation".

              Well said RCMAX.

We need to find some remedy for this kind of mass rejections.

If Consulate wanna keep the records keep it. We don't care.

              Good luck.

I am also in same boat....

I suggest..u can add some other family tie reason but not adding daughter to yr parents. As everything is recorded in embassy DB and adding sibling in next interview will be very difficult to explain.

I am also victim of only son - 214(B) visa refusal for my parents. Last year, my parents visa got refused in May and July 05. I was not aware of such things and simply applied again within 3 months.

As in yr case, my parents are highly disappointed. I am thinking to reapply in May 06 again.

My father is retired. My mom is working as teacher in semi-private school but due to some reasons at her school, we have shown her as housewife.

This time, I am planning to show her as working to minimize 214(B)...do u guys see any big problem here. Please suggest..what will be the BEST explanation for this or suggest anything else..

I guess there are many wounded soldiers like me. My parents visa got rejected twice with the same reason my brother and my self are here and my sister is married and settled in India. Even though my father said he is the only son to my Grandmother and showed around 80 laks of property they rejected and said they cannot give visa if both Sons are in US. I don't know what to do...I told my parents not to disheartened but just keep trying.

                    Lets hope for the best
