Return ticket open

My parents are flying to US with an open return ticket. Will there be any problems at the port of entry. If yes what should we do to mitigate this?

Have a confirmed Round Trip ticket. Any changes can be made within the exp.date. Open ticket invites questionable intention at entry port.

The open ticket is valid for a year. So can I have the date of the confirmed return ticket set for a year from the date of onward journey? Will that be OK with the immigration officers at the port of entry?

Carry a confirmed ticket within a 6 months period from port of entry date.
